Native meadow landscaping at Family Resource Center

I highly recommend checking out the Family Resource Center’s (San Juan island) inspired landscaping with northwest native wildflowers, created by Catkin Garden Design. It’s been a parade of color and texture since early spring, with Grindelia (gumweed) currently in full bloom. Thank you Family Resource Center and Catkin for showcasing the beauty and charm that’s possible with native landscaping.

Happily. I can try to attach a plant list and the origins of the garden here and certainly speak about it. Am about to initiate a series of little educational tours for some Master Gardeners who are interested in becoming “docents” as this little garden is the constant source of questions from the public. This was one of my goals here and now I need to follow through so the info gets passed on. I am working on some interpretive signage also…. the Market St side of the building is 99% “native” but not all coastal- I brought ove stuff from the other side of the mountains and down the coast a bit. That has always seemed interesting to me. Plans for additional seed sowing and plug planting for this coming autumn and winter. It has been a fair success so far but more to come.

It’s great to learn about your work and how enthusiastically it’s been received by our community. It sounds like there’s clearly an appetite for more public-facing gardens with native species.
